TWENTIETH SUNDAY OF THE YEAR
Weekday Readings for the Twentieth Week in Ordinary Time
(Year 2)
Psalms for Week 4
Dear Parishioners,
All three Readings at this Sunday’s Mass have a common theme. All three Readings bring before us in different ways the truth that there exists significant common ground between the Jewish People and the Church founded by Jesus Christ. Most especially, in Chapters 9 to 11 of his Letter to the Church in Rome, St Paul treats in detail of this theme and prays that in God’s good time the People of the Old Covenant and the People of the New Covenant may be fully one People.
Last Sunday, this Sunday and next Sunday the Second Reading is taken from these three most important Chapters of the Letter to the Romans. Of the Jewish People, St Paul writes in these Chapters: ‘They were adopted as sons, they were given the glory and the Covenants…they are descended form the patriarchs and from their flesh and blood came Christ.’ ‘God never takes back his gifts or revokes his choice.’ ‘God desires to show mercy to all mankind’. The Lord God has not disowned the Covenant he established long ago with his ‘ancient people the Jews’. We need always to remember this same God is the God and Father of Our Lord Jesus Christ.
We are called to pray for the fulfilment of God’s mysterious purposes, ‘for the Jewish people, the first to hear the word of God, that they may continue to grow in the love of his name and in faithfulness to his Covenant’ – these are the words we use in the Good Friday Solemn Prayers, which continue:
‘Almighty and eternal God, long ago you gave your promise to Abraham and his posterity. Listen to your Church as we pray that the people you first made your own may arrive at the fullness of redemption’.
We shall say the Parish Prayer for Evangelisation at the end of all Masses this weekend.
The Fair Trade Stall will be open after all Masses this weekend.
Would those who hope to come to the ‘Farewell to Father Denys’ at the Cedars Hotel on Sunday, 31st August at 11.45am please sign your names on the list on the table in the porch (back of the church at Woolpit) – if you have not already done so. Those organising the catering for this event need to have a reasonably accurate estimate of numbers.
At 2pm this Sunday at Our Lady’s, Stowmarket: Baptism of Jack Daniel Riley and Adriana Jane Riley, son and daughter of Mark and Jana Riley (55 Stowmarket Road, Needham Market).
This Sunday evening at Sudbury there is the annual Procession ‘The Homecoming of Our Lady of Sudbury’. The Procession will leave St Gregory’s Anglican Church (on the Croft) at 7.15pm (after Evening Prayer there) and will make its way through the town, ending at Our Lady and St John Catholic Church, where there will be a BBQ. The celebrations end with Compline at 9pm. I shall have three seats in my car – please let me know if you would like a lift.
It will not be possible to have a Celebration of Mass on Tuesday and Wednesday this week.

Further – and very importantly – we need someone to volunteer to take over from Amanda Arrowsmith, who in recent years has organised the contribution of our parish to this event. Amanda, as many of you will know, is not well and would like to work with someone this year and then hand over the job for 2009 to whoever has ‘shadowed her’ in the next few weeks. If you are willing to consider doing this, please telephone Amanda: 01449-672766.

CHURCHES TOGETHER IN STOWMARKET
‘Churches Together in Stowmarket’ are preparing a leaflet, which we hope to deliver to all houses on the Cedars Park Estate. We thought this would be an excellent way of working together as Christians in the town and letting people know about the places of worship in Stowmarket and times of Services.
The leaflet is nearly ready and we are hoping a group (with representatives from each church) will deliver them on weekday evenings between Monday, 8th September and Friday, 12th September. We shall meet on the Tesco Car Park at 6pm and finish at 7pm.
This is a great opportunity to witness together as Christians and I hope that many of you will feel able to spare an hour or two during that week in September to come along.
Further information will be given nearer the time, but if you are interested and would like to know more, please speak to me or give me a call.
