The Baptism of the Lord

Sunday Readings of Year C; Weekday Readings: Year 2
and Divine Office: Week 1 - First Week of the Year (from Monday)

Dear Brothers and Sisters,

Welcome to Mass on the Feast of the Baptism of the Lord. The Asperges (Rite of Blessing and Sprinkling of Holy Water) at the beginning of Mass and a Pastoral Letter from Bishop Michael recall our own Baptism. Copies are available at the back to take away for your own study and prayer.

RETIRING COLLECTIONS

The Retiring Collection today is for the Parish Fabric Fund.

Next Sunday will be Peace Sunday and there will be a diocesan collection for PAX CHRISTI, the international Catholic movement for peace and justice, which promotes reconciliation and a culture of peace and non-violence.

SOME NEWS FROM BISHOP MICHAEL

Please continue to remember Bishop Michael in your prayers for the sick. Unfortunately his cancer is showing “increased activity” in his bones and he has just had the first of ten sessions of chemotherapy. We pray for the success of this treatment and for Bishop Michael as he endures it.

Bishop Michael thanks all of you who sent Christmas cards to our Catholic brothers and sisters in the Holy Land and Cambodia.

WEEK OF PRAYER FOR CHRISTIAN UNITY

The 2010 Week of Prayer begins on Monday 18 th January. Like last year, there will be daily prayer sessions at the URC Church at 9.30 am (apart from Sunday) and there will be a United Service on Sunday 24 th January at 5.30 pm at the Salvation Army Citadel on Violet Hill Road. Rev. Richard Edwards, retired URC minister, will be preaching at 10.15 am Mass in Our Lady’s that Sunday. Please try to give the Week of Prayer all the support you can by joining in prayer with our fellow Christians.

AFTER CHRISTMAS, IT’S TIME TO SAY A BIG “THANK YOU” to everyone who contributed to our Christmas celebrations, beginning with the very well attended and successful Family Crib Service and Party. Our Lady’s Church was even more beautifully decorated than last year and special thanks are due to those who cleaned and prepared the church (and cleared the snow and ice) and to our florists, to all our musicians, choirs and singers who excelled themselves at both churches and to all the ministers, readers and servers. May God bless you all and your families.

Thank you all for your great kindness to me, for your prayers for my mother and myself and for the very generous Christmas Offering and all the delightful presents, cards and greetings. All we need now is some better weather to warm us up and cheer us all in 2010.
